Up for consideration is a large finely cast figural Novelty Garden Bird Silver plated inkstand or inkwell. The piece is marked James Deakin & Sons Sheffield P 7431 and dates some where around 1888 or so. It measures about 7.75 inches in length which includes the base and a height of about 5 inches. The bird has jeweled or glass eyes and is very well cast.

It is more or less a sculpture with "X" mounts used as a pen rest. It has a silver plated insert that may or may not be original. The casting is about as good as it gets... Please understand that there is some cleaning solution or residue caught in the fine crevices of the casting.

Overall the plating looks strong with a small rub mark in the front oval base. The legs look to have been repaired at one time and or are just bent. The legs should be straight which would allow better positioning of body so that pen rest is not impeded...

Nonetheless clocking in at about 135 years of age and given it's function it is in surprisingly good condition. The hinge is intact with some light overall wear. If you have any questions or something to share please message me...
